Starting Fresh: The Steps To Planning a Home Remodel

As a homeowner, the prospect of starting to remodel your home can be a very exciting idea. It can also be an idea that brings a lot of anxiety and stress if you’re not sure how to go about it. Home remodels are big projects, and there are many things that need to go right so they can go off without a hitch. We’ll walk you through the steps to planning a home remodel, so you can feel more prepared when the time comes to finally start.

Step 1: Defining Your Goals

Without a detailed plan of attack, you’re essentially going into this large project blind. Knowing that you want to change a part of your home is only the first step. You’ll need to clearly define the improvements you want to make and be realistic about what you can do yourself and what you’ll need a professional for.

Step 2: Creating Your Budget

Nothing can begin without the money to start it. Before you start spending on materials and hiring help, it is worthwhile to take a bit of time to draft up a budget that you would like to stick to for the entire project. Be pragmatic and understand that projects like these rarely come without some sort of costly complication.

Step 3: Contacting Experts

If you’re an experienced home builder, perhaps you won’t need this step, but the majority of us will need to seek the help of expert contractors for assistance. Remember that cost is only one factor of a good contractor. You’ll also want to consider experience level, communication abilities, and the payment schedule for the contractor you’re hiring.

Step 4: Planning Out the Timeline

Once everything is in place, you can really begin to consider when you want to begin construction. Choosing a start date is a crucial step, and you need to be sure you have enough time to pack up your things and make the proper arrangements. Ask your contractor for help figuring out how long each major step will take, so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Step 5: Preparing Your Home for Remodeling

When all is said and done, you can begin the process in earnest. Move all your belongings out of the area being remodeled and create a plan for how you will deal with the construction. Will you still be in the house? What rooms will you need to co-opt to keep everything in order? What will you do with all the demolition debris and garbage?

Hopefully, you can see now that starting fresh and planning a home remodel doesn’t have to be stressful if you plan ahead. The earlier you can get everything settled, the better off you will be for the entire process.
