– After a weekend full of tasting, deliberation, and more tasting, Byway Brewing Company swept the professional division at the 18th Indiana Brewers’ Cup Competition by picking up the title of Grand Champion Brewery of the Year, Indiana Brewery of the Year, and Best in Show. Founded in 2013 by Dave Toth, Tom Duszynski, and Branko Sajn, Byway Brewing Co. currently serves nine beers on tap in their local restaurant and taproom located at 2825 Carlson Ave., Hammond, IN.
In 1997 Munster’s Dave Toth and good friend, Chicagoan Tom Duszynski, brewed their first batch of beer together at a terrific brew-on-premise establishment called Brewing Company #9 in Chicago. Following BC#9’s untimely closure in the fall of 2002, Dave and a small group of seasoned home brewers and close friends from Munster established the Sandy Bottom Brewing club. With home town Three Floyds Brewing Company a constant reminder of and one of the reasons why craft beer fever has swept the nation, Sandy Bottom Brewing devoted the next 10 years to the art of crafting and drinking fine ales. Their popular Brew-A-Palooza started modestly with around 35 guests and swelled to 250 by the fall of 2012.
In the summer of 2013 and after two years of researching towns and buildings in NW Indiana, Dave developed a business plan and met with good friend and fellow Munster resident, Branko Sajn, about bringing his unique experience with an upscale restaurant to the brewery project. Reuniting with Tom, who brings financial and accounting insight, this group set their sights on a production brewery and taproom that ultimately landed in Hammond.
With 1,500 total entries and 140 judges this year, the Indiana Brewers’ Cup Competition has solidified its place as one of the nation’s largest competitions to feature home and professional brewers. Professional brewers had 32 possible divisions to enter as did their homebrew counterparts. The Indiana Brewers’ Cup Competition is a prestigious event—it is a Master Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB) qualifying competition and is also a Midwest Homebrewer of the Year Circuit Event. In addition to attracting brewers from across the state of Indiana, the 2016 Indiana Brewers’ Cup drew competitors from all across the country.
