It’s Just Serendipity – A Unique Shopping Experience

“Serendipity” means to make desirable discoveries by accident. “It’s Just Serendipity,” is a ececltic store with a new and unique concept in downtown Hammond by Karen Maravilla and Raymundo Garcia. Helping to revitalize the downtown district, the couple wants to celebrate the nostalgia a downtown district brings to the community.
Several new stores have opened downtown Hammond, like the Eat Banquet Center, the Paul Henry Art Gallery, that is lead by a prosperous and exciting Towle Theater, all located on or near Hohman Avenue. Garcia is no stranger to Hammond, who owns and manages a popular restaurant in Hammond called El Taco Real.
The couple’s plans of purchasing and renovating two other buildings downtown, including the former Woolworth building, are well under way. Seeing a resurgence of people wanting to visit, dine and shop in a bustling downtown area, is the why the couple opened Serendipity. Recently, the Downtown Hammond Council has produced a very successful Bizarre Bazaar, Arts on the Ave, Haunting in Hammond, as well at the now-annual Hammond Holiday Kickoff Celebration/A Tribute to “A Christmas Story.”
Playing off of Hammond’s nostalgic atmosphere “It’s Just Serendipity” was built using materials of historical significance to Hammond. The entryway windows were from a 19th century house on Oak Street in north Hammond. The fir trim appointing the stage area under the front window is original to the Kresge Store, which eventually became K-Mart and in later years was renamed Jupiter.
The old Jupiter building is one of the three the couple purchased. In addition to housing the offices of nonprofit organizations, the building soon will be home to a day spa. The owners plans to open a sister restaurant to El Taco Real within the Woolworth building.
The serendipitous store sells a collection of gifts, antiques, art, hand-made items, vintage clothing, furniture and a collection of course “accidental discoveries. Also, the store has specialty food items, flowers and makes custom gift baskets.
It’s Just Serendipity is located at 5630 Hohman Ave., Hammond, and can be reached by calling (219) 512-4298 or visiting www.itsjustserendipity.com. Their hours are optional but usually 2 to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
