Ron shares his deep knowledge of biodiversity and what makes the Indiana Dunes National Park such a unique ecological treasure. Having spent decades exploring the area, he offers insights you won’t hear anywhere else.
In the conversation, Ron discusses remarkable locations like the Great Marsh at Beverly Shores — the only remaining marsh of its kind in the entire Great Lakes region — as well as The PAV (The Pavilion at Wolf Lake), where windsurfing and fascinating creatures like mudpuppies can be found.
He also highlights seasonal wildlife, including Spring trout, Fall salmon, salamanders, snowy owls, sandhill cranes, blue herons, and especially monarch butterflies.
Ron takes us through Amber Flatwoods, an old-growth forest, along with notable exotic areas such as Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Brincka Cross Gardens, and local events like the upcoming Indiana Dunes Birding Festival and 30th Annual FRIENDS of Indiana Dunes Native Plant Sale — also home to an incredible 375 species of #birds.
You’ll also learn why the Heron Rookery is considered the best place in Indiana to see wildflowers in Spring, and why the Indiana Dunes rank among the most biodiverse Regions in the Midwest. Ron touches on unique features like the 400 species of hostas at Brincka Cross Gardens and explains the life cycle of monarch butterflies, emphasizing the vital role of milkweed.
The discussion also covers invasive species like Oriental bittersweet, the work of Friends of Indiana Dunes, Inc. , Inc. and much more. Panoramanow also Covers #ThingsToDo #This Weekend!
