Marquette Greenway Trail Opened To Indiana Dunes National park

Another recently completed Next Level Trails project was the Marquette Greenway in Portage. This new section  closed a gap in the Marquette Greenway system by constructing 0.94-miles of trail through part of Indiana Dunes National Park, including a pedestrian bridge over Salt Creek.

This new section of the Marquette Greenway closes a gap in the Marquette Greenway system between the Ameriplex Business Park in Portage and the section of the trail completed in June 2021 in the town of Burns Harbor. This project constructed 0.94 miles of asphalt trail through part of Indiana Dunes National Park, including a pedestrian bridge over Salt Creek, and retaining walls and fencing. This project is part of a collaborative effort with the town of Burns Harbor, a first-round Next Level Trails awardee.

Congrats to the City of Portage on the opening of their one-mile segment of the Marquette Greenway over Salt Creek. Wonderful partnership between the city and the National Park on this outstanding addition to our regional trail network. The Marquette Greenway is now complete in Portage between State Roads 149 and 249 – a three-mile contiguous stretch – with more to come!
