Portage Township YMCA enjoyed an egg hunt and visit from the Easter Bunny and enrolled Preschoolers in classes at the on Friday, April 2nd. The generous bunny, played by Board President Jeff Liggett, made a donation to the Y’s Annual Campaign which officially kicked off on April 5th. To provide equity and access to health, nutrition, and youth programs the YMCA’s goal is to raise over $60,000 before May 28th.
CEO, Shannon Burhans, said, “We rely on donations to expand our reach to more families who have trouble paying for the services they rely on like childcare for students before and after, weight loss programs, and other initiatives that build a stronger community. Donations also help us offer free and discounted memberships for first responders, veterans, and families of deployed military. When combined with grant funding, donations allow us to offer some programs for free like weeknight dinners for children, the middle school SOAR program, and cooking classes.”
Jan Zurek, Development Director, adds, “We experienced an unexpected influx of donations last year when COVID-19 hit our community. People wanted to be part of the work they saw the Y doing like feeding families, checking on seniors, and streaming virtual exercise classes. Donors trust the Y to use their money effectively to improve the quality of life in Portage and the surrounding areas.”
