Thanksgiving for most, is a day filled with family, food and giving thanks. For the Portage Township YMCA, Thanksgiving is all of that and so much more. On Thanksgiving Day the Portage Township YMCA will host its 18th Annual Turkey Trot. Proceeds from this event will benefit their Annual Support Campaign. The Y uses the funds to offset costs of their services through financial assistance to qualifying candidates. Membership and programs are included in this scholarship fund and the Y turns no one away.
The Turkey Trot has 3 components: a free 1k Kids Fun Run for children 7 years and younger, and for those 8 years and older, a 5k walk & run or 4-mile professionally-timed competitive run. Race registration increases to $30 on October 23 through race day, but participants will want to register no later than November 5 to be guaranteed a commemorative Turkey Trot long-sleeve shirt. At the end of the race, awards will be presented by gender and age categories.
Erin Robles, Sr. Programs & Marketing Director for the Y has attended the event nearly every year she has worked there and has had the privilege of capturing the race in photographs. “I didn’t know what the race was all about when I first heard of it. I hate running and would never have considered participating in something like this before. However, seeing the different ages and abilities of the people participating year after year, has inspired me to cross the finish line with my 8-year-old son, Fernando Jr.”. For Robles, the race is so much more than a race. It is an unimaginable, yet achievable goal. It is a way to give back to an organization that gives itself to the community every day. It is a reason to run.
Participants have three easy ways to register: at the Portage Township YMCA, via the Portage Township YMCA Mobile App or their website, www.ymcaofportage.org and at www.runsignup.com. For those that have pre-registered for the event, packet pick-up will take place on November 21 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Y. Race check-in and day-of registration takes place on at 6:30 AM with the free kids 1k fun run beginning at 7:30 AM and 5k & 4-mile at 8:00 AM. Additional Turkey Trot shirts are available at just $10/youth size & $15/adult size through November 5. Free child care is also available the day of the race. Infants, children not yet walking unassisted, require advanced reservation. Call 219-762-9622 to make reservations.
The Portage Township YMCA is located at 3100 Willowcreek Rd., Portage, IN. To learn more about the Turkey Trot or the Portage Township YMCA, visit their website at www.ymcaofportage.org. The Y is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
