by Mother Diva,
Toriano Adaryll Jackson The First, was born October 15, 1953 in Gary Indiana to Katherine and Joseph Jackson. He was the 3rd child born to this union.
The young Jackson brothers often sang songs while during chores, mainly songs they heard on the radio.
Now Joe Jackson had a band called “The Falcons” and Mom Katherine enjoyed country and western music she would often sing to. Music was in Tito’s DNA.
Tito’s brother Sigmund Esco aka Jackie had a friend who was a musician named Reynaud Jones. The Jackson Brothers would often go over to Reynaud’s home to be in a musical environment. They all soaked up the musical energy.
Mr. Jones had several bands he was involved with. He was a young version of Quincy Jones if you will. Reynaud also taught Tito how to play several songs on the guitar.
He formed a band with the Jackson Brothers called, “Jawaun and the Torianos.” When I spoke to Mr. Jones he told me, “Jermaine’s middle name was Lajuane and he got it all mixed up and it came out Jawaun and he used Tito’s birth first name to create the name for the band”.
Jermaine was the lead singer. The band consisted of Reynaud Jones -Guitar, Jermaine Jackson, Tito Jackson – Guitar, Jackie Jackson and Milford Hite on Drums and to give the baby brothers something to do Marlon was on Tamborines and Michael played the bongos.

He would get up at 3am to go to work. After all this man had a family of 11 to take care of. In Joseph’s mind he couldn’t entertain the thought of his children playing around with music. Everyone on the block could sing and dance.
Well since Tito had been learning guitar from Reynaud; he had been sneaking and playing his father’s guitar and one day broke the string on the guitar. Well now Tito was in a panic because he knew he was going to get the whipping of the century.
Joe came home and was furious. He tore Tito bottom up. Joe invited Tito to play for him. He was so impressed he gave Tito the guitar (which is now in a case on display at a local casino in Gary Indiana)
Joe finally paid attention to his children’s talent. He told Jackie to tell Reynaud he was changing the name of the group to “The Jackson Brothers” and added Keyboard player Ronnie Rancifer and Johnny Jackson on drums.
However it was Aunt Bobbie Jackson, Joe’s sister in-law who was married to Joe’s brother Uncle Luther and best friends with Katherine; who suggested that the brothers get in the Roosevelt’s High School Talent Show. Ironically the school was right in back of The Jackson’s home 2300 Jackson St. Gary Indiana. The siblings were enrolled at Roosevelt.
Well the Jackson Brothers won the talent show of course. They began performing around town and other nearby cities. The brothers audition for Evelyn LaHaie a model/talent show producer in 1965.
Ms. LaHaie suggested to Joseph there are too many brothers this and sisters that change their name to the Jackson 5 since there are 5 of them.
Joseph took her advice. The Jackson 5 performed in Chicago at High Chapparel night club managed by Helen Wooten (godmother to Mother Diva) also The Green Bunny and kept winning the Regal theater talent show every week.
It got to a point that the audience was getting angry because Jackson 5 kept winning. So Jackson 5 was pulled out of the talent show contest and added as a featured act. The Regal talent show was produced by E. Rodney Jones a local disc jockey and Pervis Spann radio station owner.
Spann and Jones connected the Jackson 5 to the Leaner Brothers who owned Onderful Records on Michigan Ave. The brothers went into the studio to record a tune, ” Big Boy” written by Eddie Silvers. Larry Blessingame on guitar with Tito. The boys vocal coach was Ms. Shirley Cartwright.
A test press copy was distributed around and Jones and Spann tried to get the Jackson 5 a record deal but nothing worked. Motown said no (Berry Gordy didn’t want any more children after dealing with Little Stevie Wonder) and so did Curtis Mayfield’s label. So they turned the Jackson 5 over to William Adams aka Gordon Keith CEO of Steeltown Records a Gary Indiana Label.
Jackson 5 first contract with Steel Town Records signed in 1967.
Gordon hired some professional musicians and drove the Jackson 5 over to Sunny Sawyer Studios on south side of Chicago and re-recorded Big Boy. Six weeks later Gordon secured a distribution deal with Atlantic Records for a 45 single of “Big Boy” with “You’ve Changed” on side B. The single sold thousands of copies.
Steeltown Records distribution contract with Atlantic Records signed by President of Atlantic Records in 1968 Jerry Wexler.
It caught the attention of Berry Gordy in addition to Mr. Gordy being pressured by Bobby Taylor, Gladys Knight, and Suzanne Depasse to sign the group.
Gordy finally gave in and signed the Jackson 5 who went on to sell over 50 million records on Motown scoring number one hits. Jackson 5 was the first singing group that had to tour with security. The were deemed the nickname, “The Black Beatles”.
On June 16, 1972 Toriano married his high school sweetheart Delores “De De” Martes and to this union 3 sons were born. Taj, (Tariano Adaryl Jackson II, ) TJ, (Tito Joseph Jackson) and Taryll Jackson known as 3T.
After leaving Motown, life became full circle for the Jackson Brothers. Berry Gordy owned the name “Jackson 5” it was in the contract Joe Jackson signed. Unfortunately, out of his excitement of finally getting his boys on Motown, he either never read the contract and if he did he skipped over that part. We all know Joseph said “no one should own or take my boys name”.
So the Jackson 5 left Motown and signed with Epic/Sony as The Jacksons which is how they started only leaving the Brothers title off this time around.
The Jacksons sold a combined total of 7 albums close to 20 million records including THE Triumph Live Album and Greatest Hits Album on Epic/Sony.
Everyone always looked forward to Tito’s guitar solos. Especially on “Heartbreak Hotel” from the Triumph Album (went triple platinum) here is a clip of Tito performing at 1984 Jackson’s Victory Tour. https://youtu.be/CgyDHL1j_Bg?si=VvUiTi0e-GBJAE_q
Panoramanow’s very own Mother Diva interviews Tito about the guitar solo in this clip from the 2010 Chicago’s African Festival of The Arts.
The Victory Tour was the final tour for Jackson Brothers. It was Joe and Katherine’s dream for all 6 of their sons to perform together. The tour went to 22 cities in the United States performing to 2.5 million people and grossed over 75 million dollars making it the highest grossing concert of 1984 by a family of brothers.
Tito decided after his children were grown and now a grandfather to embark on a solo career.
Tito’s 2016 solo album, “Tito Time” featured Big Daddy Kane on track “Get It Baby”. The single went to number 19 on the Billboard Adult R & B Airplay Charts. Toriano’s 2021 Blues Album went to number 6 on the Billboard Blues Chart.
Last year he connected with Natalia Dimini, a Brazilian singer, for a track called “Attitude” it got 1.5 million streams on Spotify. Tito has a huge fan base overseas.
When Tito came to Chicago for a CD signing a few years back the line was around the corner in 2019.
Tito waited to do his solo album because he wanted to focus on being a husband and father. Songs “So far So Good” and “Love One Another” are my two favorites,” said Mother Diva.
Tito had relocated to Clarmore Oklahoma and was building businesses in that community. Tito was fun loving, had a forgiving spirit, and loved to make pound cake and peach cobbler from scratch.
Tito was affectionately known as Poppa T. He meant a lot to me. When we met, Tito introduced me to his cousin Keith Jackson and through Keith I met his brother, Ron, sister Marie, his mother Aunt Bobbie, niece Latoya, Katherine, Joe, Latoya Tito’s sister, Tito’s nephews and niece, Bigi, Prince, and Paris (who is now like a daughter to me) said Mother Diva.”
