New Reservations System for Indiana Dunes Campsites & Shelters

The National Park Service is proposing a reservation system for 11 picnic shelters and 34 campsites at Indiana Dunes National Park. A reservation system will allow visitors to plan their camping trips and picnics at the national park up to six months in advance.

Currently, all picnic shelters in the park and all campsites at Dunewood Campground are on a first-come, first-served basis. Under this proposed system, half of the campsites will be reservable and half on a first-come basis. Picnic shelters at West Beach and the Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm area will be on a reservation system while other shelters in the park will remain first-come, first-served.

There will be no increase in fees for any of the campsites at Dunewood Campground. All campsites will remain $25 per night. However, there is a proposed fee for reserving picnic shelters. A reservation fee of $25 would be charged for each of the eight shelters at West Beach. At Bally Homestead and Chellberg Farm area, the two small shelters would be $25 and the larger one, with electrical power, would be $50. Any shelter that is not reserved, would still be available at no cost on a first-come basis. If approved, this reservation system may be in place during the spring or early summer. Reservations would be made online at www.recreation.gov.

The National Park Service is seeking comments on this proposed reservation system and fee. Comments can be sent electronically to INDU_Communications@nps.gov or by writing to the Superintendent at 1100 North Mineral Springs Road, Porter, Indiana 46304. In addition, comments and questions will be taken by park staff at an Open House on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center located at 1215 North State Highway 49, Porter, Indiana. All comments must be received by April 30, 2020.
