Barker Mansion Opens After Renovations

The Barker Mansion, a cherished historic gem in Michigan City, Indiana, opened its doors on June 1st, following an extensive restoration.

Steeped in history and representing the epitome of Gilded Age luxury, The Barker Mansion is a testament to the success and innovation of the Barker family. This 35,000-square-foot marvel features 38 opulent rooms, 10 elegant bathrooms, and 7 grand fireplaces. Visitors can also enjoy the serene Jens Jensen-designed garden, a perfect spot to relax, play games, and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. The mansion proudly features its newest permanent exhibit, “The Haskell & Barker Car Company and Legacy of Freight,” celebrating the family’s influential industrial contributions.

Since being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, The Barker Mansion has been a distinguished venue for tours, special events, educational programs, weddings, meetings, and various celebrations. This reopening marks a new chapter, ensuring the mansion continues to serve not only as a monument to the past but also as a vibrant hub for cultural and educational events today.

“We invite visitors of all ages to embark on a journey through time and witness the splendor of this historic residence,” said the mansion’s Program & Operation Manager, Michele Gustin. “The Barker Mansion is not just a relic of history but a living testament to the power of preservation.”
