Event Type

The Midwest Sundowners is  a model airplane club focusing on radio-controlled aircraft; located in Wheeler, Indiana. Their  next special flying event, Pylon Races, will take place on Saturday August 29th 2026.  There is NO CHARGE for spectators and parking is FREE too! Their wonderfully delicious hamburgers will be served starting at noon.

   Pilots will race around a course that uses 3 poles (or pylons) for 10 laps. Fastest time wins and pilots must not cut (turn inside) a pylon to be legal.

      Several different classes, based on engine sizes, including electric power planes will be competing. We typically attract racers from all around the Midwest.

     It promises to be an exciting day of racing. Be sure to attend, all spectators are welcome and admission is FREE!

         Join the Midwest Sundowners at Wheeler Flying Field for a day filled with thrilling aerial flights and opportunities to buy, sell and trade RC Airplanes and airplane parts.

     Whether you’re a seasoned pilot or just starting out, this event is perfect for all enthusiasts. Watch as skilled pilots showcase their flying skills in intense race around poles with their RC airplanes, and browse through a  variety of airplanes at the swap meet.
     Don’t miss out on this exciting event! Come Out and Watch a this Flying Contest as the Sundowners Club Pilots Compete for the winner. Enjoy the Comradery of fellow airplane enthusiasts and experts. 

     Take your turn at flying one of the planes, and find out what it’s like to be a member of the Midwest Sundowners RC Flying Club.  Landing Fee will be $10 for pilots, $20 to enter the Contest, and Spectators are FREE

THE FIELD FROM THE NORTH  

      From 130 turn south onto 625W and follow which turns into Jones Road and then into 675W. Follow the curve around and take the split to the south until the road becomes 650W and the field is on the east side of the road.

​​DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE FIELD FROM THE SOUTH

      From Rt. 30 just east of Deep River Water Park (about 1 mile) turn north on 725W (across from the strawberry farm) and proceed north to 450N (Hoosiers Nest House) and turn east. Continue East about 1/2 mile and turn north onto 650W. The Field should be visible within 1/4 mile on the east side of the road. The GPS coordinates for the field are 41.50556, -87.19083.
