Midwest Sundowners RC Airplane Club were invited to put up a tabletop display at the Wheeler High School/ Middle School on Monday, May 19th. Dan Kenning the Science Chair at Wheeler High School provided Ed Rogala and Bill Bolz a great space next to the lunch room area at the High School to speak to students about our upcoming Model Aviation Day to be held on Saturday, June 21st.
“There was good interest among these students, males and well as females, in fact we met one young lady who is currently learning to fly at Porter County airport and will solo soon, ” stated Ed Rogala.
Dan Kenning who is the Science Chair at Wheeler High School has been most helpful in spreading the word for this Model Aviation Day to the students. Wheeler High School is literally down the road from the flying site/ model airport, “Rainford Field” located at 476N 650W, Wheeler Indiana. Dan started putting up notices on multiple school bulletin boards earlier this year. He’s always looking for activities for their students that promotes science and physics.
After the Club reached out to Dan they were invited to attend the High School prior to the end of the school year to meet and speak to students personally. Thrilled to get in front of the Wheeler students, the date was set for Monday, the 19th. Dan took the time to secure a great location in their Commons area and representatives were able to meet and speak with students as they were heading to their lunch break. There were four separate 30 minute lunch breaks which allowed representatives to speak casually with interested students about their upcoming Model Aviation Day that is focused on young adults ages 13 – 18year old. Bill Bolz, our Club Instructor brought one of our trainer planes for the students to see. The Club also handed out informative brochures and stickers provided by “Academy of Model Aeronautics” which is the governing body for Model Aviation in the U.S.
The Model Aviation Day will have a flight simulator and Flight Demos for the Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers. Junior Membership (ages 13 – 18) is only $18 and Adult Membership is only $131. Memberships include AMA Flight Membership. Lunch is free to Flight Demo Students.
This was a great opportunity and for both the students and staff to learn about the Club’s events in Wheeler this flying season. Please mark June 21st on your calendar and visit the Midwest Sundowner pilots on Model Aviation Day.
