Are you invited to a wedding or recently attended a wedding? Well, there’s new social media rules that apply for both the bride and the guests. Did you know there are “Social Media Rules” that the bride must follow?
Apparently, there are a ton of social media “rules” the boomers may not be aware of. Boomers are used to posting photos whenever they want, but in today’s society that’s no longer the case. Since everyone has a phone, and most phones take high quality photographs, it can be confusing the rules of the road when attending a wedding or other life events outlined below.
However, it is the responsibility of the bride to let her guests know her personal social media preferences. Actually, when sending out the invitations, the bride should include her social media preferences AND/OR have these “rules” on the wedding website. In the invitations AND ONLINE, the bride needs to say something like, “We kindly ask that our guests refrain from posting photos or updates on social media until after we have have made our own posts. We also ask for no photos during or after the wedding until we have given permission.” The bride can even ask that all posts be shared from her own page! (Which is very popular when the bride has a professional photographer)
Conversely, there are many “wedding traditions” that millennials may not be aware of as well. We all should know that no one dances until the bride and groom dance, no one eats their meal until the bride and groom does, no one partakes in anything until there has been a prayer, and no one eats cake until the cake cutting ceremony, (which should be at the beginning of the reception, in order to allow the caterer the time they need to cut the cake.)
Other traditions include having the father – bride dance after the bridal dance, then the mother son – dance, Then, the father of groom dances with the bride and the mother in law dances with the groom. And then the parents dance and then bridal party dances before any guests dance. Of course, it’s up to the bride to make these many decisions, but the guests should be made aware of the bride’s intentions via announcements by the DJ or other means of letting the guests know.
However, there are also “social media” rules to follow now. Having said that, here’s what we found on chatgpt . . .
1. Let People Share Their Own News First such as Engagements, pregnancies, job changes, or health updates should come from the person directly.
2. Wait for the Couple at Weddings & Big Events to post first
3. Don’t post photos before the bride, groom, or hosts do — unless they’ve said it’s okay.
4. Respect Privacy Settings
5. Don’t tag people, kids, or locations without checking first.
6. Think Before You Post Photos of Others
7. Avoid unflattering, embarrassing, or private shots unless you know they’re comfortable with it.
8. Don’t Overshare or Flood Feeds Posting 30 photos in a row can overwhelm your friends — a highlight reel is enough.
9. Keep Fights & Drama Offline Airing arguments, subtweets, or call-outs usually creates more harm than good.
10. Be Careful with Screenshots
11. Never share private conversations or DMs without permission.
12. Mind Your Timing Posting during a ceremony, funeral, or important speech can be seen as disrespectful.
13. Check Before Posting Kids’ Photos Parents may not want their children online, so always ask first.
14. Be Kind & Thoughtful If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t post it on social media. For More Do’s and Don’ts with Social Media Click here
