3 Essential Packing Tips for a Smooth Move

Moving is one of life’s greatest stressors, but that’s because most people don’t have a solid system. Luckily, here’s a list of three essential packing tips for a smooth move. Read on to learn how you can stay calm and easily get where you’re going.

Buy Packing Accessories Ahead of Time

There’s nothing more annoying than making great progress on a room and realizing you’ve run out of packing tape. Before your first packing day comes, take some time to visit your local hardware store and pick up the moving essentials: cardboard boxes, packing tape, and a box cutter.

If you end up with a box or two you don’t end up needing, it’s OK! They’re cheap, and it’s better to have an excess than a lack.

Give Yourself More Time Than You Need

Time is critical in stress-free packing (can you tell?). If you think you need a week to pack, give yourself two. Estimate how many days you’ll need to pack up each room, then double that number. If you end up using all the time, it’s a good thing you gave yourself more! If you don’t, you have a few extra days to say goodbye to old hangout spots or friends that you may leave behind.

If you’re moving long distances, allowing extra time is even more important. You likely have to schedule movers well in advance for longer trips, so you don’t want to be running behind. Starting early is just one of the things to consider when moving across the country. Plan ahead so that you don’t stress.

Label Your Boxes

As you pack, label all your boxes. Mark which room each box goes to, either by writing the room type on the box or color-coding rooms and marking the boxes with their associated color. That way, you’ll know where to put all your boxes when you get to your new house.

If you couple this strategy with a spreadsheet, you can keep a running list of the items in each box. This is perfect if you have younger kids who can’t live without their favorite toys for too long—you’ll know which boxes to crack open when you arrive at the new home.

Now that you know these three essential packing tips for a smooth move, grab some boxes and start your journey with time to spare.
