Northwest Indiana Oilmen Kicked out of Oilmen Stadium – Whiting Indiana

In early February 2026, the Northwest Indiana Oilmen were reportedly “cast out” of their long-term home,  Oil City Stadium, after 15 years in Whiting, Indiana.

The city of Whiting has reportedly chosen to replace the Oilmen with two expansion teams, including one affiliated with the Chicago White Sox and another managed by the son of a former White Sox manager.

Oilmen President Don Popravak expressed surprise at the decision, stating he only learned recently that the team would not be playing at the stadium for the 2026 season.

Mayor Steve Spebar defended the move, calling growth stagnant in the Oilmen’s five-team Northern League. He hopes the re-turfed stadium will draw more attention to the 1,100-seat ballpark at 1700 119th St.

“We look forward to more people coming and more concessions. We will advertise throughout the year. The last couple of years we expanded out-of-town tournaments and teams were here for days. I’ve seen first-hand they patronize downtown,” he said.

The city recently installed new turf at the stadium and aims to expand usage by attracting more travel tournaments and year-round events.

The team had previously announced its 2026 milestone season in late 2024, but the city’s recent move to bring in new tenants has left the franchise’s immediate future in Whiting uncertain.
