5 Reasons Why Voting Is Important

by Lorann Lombardini
In a busy life, why is it important to vote?  Just like grabbing that hot, enlightening, and needed cup of coffee, you have to be sure you get your ballot and submit it!  We must elect people the way it was intended—openly, honestly, and fairly!
One, people fought and continue to defend our right to vote for a reason.  Many places in the world dream of a day they can at least have the freedom to choose.  Some elections are won by just a few votes.  Think if your entire family voted, you could change the outcome!
Two, don’t just vote, be informed.  Read, research, ask wise people, avoid being “brain washed” or “doing as you are told.”  Even if your candidate doesn’t win, you have learned and planted seeds for the representative to be aware of moving forward.
Three, your officials should be characteristic of your population.  Did you know that even though women make up 50% of the US, that only 10% of offices are held by women ?  As RBG stated, “anywhere decisions are being made, there needs to be a female voice.”
Four, elections affect your life every day!  Decisions are made by people in office, ie taxes, services, and programs that not only you, but future generations will have to live with indefinitely.
Five, if you don’t vote your community suffers.  Change is made by consistent, wise, often irritable efforts.  In this case your vote is your, “Are we there yet?”  If you are not registered to vote, go to Vote.org and do it on line by Oct 11, 2022 in less than 5 minutes.

Early voting starts Wednesday, Oct 12, 2022 in Indiana and in Porter County a voter can go to at ANY of the Vote Centers in the County even on Nov 8, 2022 which is Election Day!  If you have questions or to get a hard copy of your voter registration, call Porter County Elections at 219 465 3485 or visit porterco.org.
