Located in an almost forgotten corner of southeast Chicago, in the quaint and historic neighborhood of Hegewisch is an isolated blue collar community boarded by Lake Calumet, railroad tracks and the Ford assembly plant you’ll find Steve’s Lounge. It is in this almost ideal “classic tavern” environment that one can find. To experience a traditional fish fry in Chicago, Steve’s is the place to go where fried fish is served on Friday night all year round.
Steve’s Lounge, which opened just after the end of prohibition is one of Chicago’s most beautiful and well preserved bars. A second generation family-owned business, Steve’s has maintained the original wood trim, tiled ceilings, indirect lighting, a curved bar, display cases packed with collectible whiskey bottles, a vintage telephone booth …everything that makes a classic a classic.
Clean and inexpensive, Steve’s recently added an expanded menu of Craft Beers. Among some of the specially priced craft beers, you’ll find: Amber Ale, Blue Moon, Sam Adams, New Belgium Brewing, Jaw Jacker, Goose Island Farmhouse Ale, Brunehaut, Fat Tire, and many more. Steve’s also has selections from Greenbush, Round Barn, Two Brothers, Ale Asylum, Bells, and Dark Horse.
The perch is perfect and Steve’s serves seafood in their banquet hall every Friday all year round, after 4:30 pm. You’ll find excellent deep fried Lake Perch; crispy outside, tender and firm inside, but not greasy. Their homemade coleslaw, with a hint of pineapple, may be the best; not too sweet yet tangy. You can also choose off the menu a wide selection of Fried Shrimp, Walleye, Halibut, Fried Chicken, BBQ specials, Polish Sausage, and much more. However, their specialties are: homemade in-house Polish Sausage, Sauerkraut, Italian Sausage, Sweet Cream Garlic House Dressing and the best Fried Chicken around, among many other delicious dishes. Many patrons are known to take home packages of Steve’s polish Sausage. Choose the potato pancakes, with a hint of onion, and your choice of sour cream or apple sauce. Everyone is treated to a homemade bread basket and with it a relish tray featuring cottage cheese, home made coleslaw, and pickled beets. They also serve Polish sausage and sauerkraut and some of the best fried chicken you will ever eat.
Steve’s can also be found around the local Chicago movie scenes. They have catered movies such as Oceans 13, Stranger than Fiction, the Ice Harvest and Batman as well as catered for many Rock Stars, Country Singers, MTV productions, and the Chicago Marathon Pre-Race Dinner.
