The “A Christmas Story” Comes Home exhibit centers around 6 animatronic window displays from Macy’s Department Store in New York featuring different scenes from “A Christmas Story.”
The Indiana Welcome Center will feature six animated displays depicting scenes from “A Christmas Story”. The displays include: The Hibgee’s Department Store Window, Flick’s Tongue and the Triple Dog Dare, It’s a Major Award, Santa’s Mountain at Higbee’s, The Bumpus Hounds and A Hero’s Dream. The displays were first showcased in 2003 in the windows of the Macy’s in New York City.
Not only can you see the Macy’s ‘”A Christmas Story” window displays, there are many other activities going on. Every day kids can enjoy the craft table and write letters to Santa. See the wonderful decorated trees that are on display and vote for your favorite tree. Each tree was decorated and represents a selective local charity or organization.
The holiday classic, “A Christmas Story”, was written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark and was based on Shepherd’s 1966 book, “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.” The book is a compilation of short stories based on Shepherd’s experiences growing up in Hammond, Indiana. A number of the short stories appeared in Playboy magazine and originated from his unscripted radio broadcasts in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Shepherd narrated the entire movie and also had a cameo in the Department Store scene. The movie was set in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana which was a disguise for Shepherd’s hometown: Hammond. Hohman is one of Hammond’s busiest downtown streets.
You can take photos around the Flick Statue and share with your friends! The Flick statue was commissioned in January 2013 by the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority to commemorate two special anniversaries: their 30th anniversary, as well as the 30th anniversary of the holiday classic “A Christmas Story.” In the iconic scene from the holiday classic, “A Christmas Story,” Flick gets his tongue stuck to a flagpole on a triple dog dare. This scene is now immortalized in a beautiful bronze statue outside the Indiana Welcome Center. The statue was created by Oscar Leon, an artist with Timeless Creations – The Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany and in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. In addition to Flick, Rotblatt-Amrany’s studio created numerous statues at the Community Veterans Memorial in Munster, the Orville Redenbacher statue in Valparaiso and statues of Michael Jordan, Frank Thomas and Harry Carey in Chicago.
The A Christmas Story Comes Home exhibit, which is presented in agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will run through Dec. 31, 2016. The Indiana Welcome Center is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at the intersection of I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue South in Hammond, Indiana.
