The La Porte County Historical Society will begin its 2022 Membership Drive on Saturday, November 13, 2021. This will be a “Belle Gunness Day” with presentations at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. Admission to the programs will be $15 for adults which will include a One Year Membership to the Museum and other programs and events.
La Porte County Historical Society President and County Historian Bruce R. Johnson and Senior Judge William J. Boklund will examine different aspects of the legend of Belle Gunness. Johnson will speak first followed by Boklund. Both speakers will give their presentations at 2:00 and at 7:00.
Bruce Johnson will give a showing of his documentary film “The Gunness Mystery”. It tells the true story of Belle Gunness, La Porte’s notorious serial killer, and her life of crime. Johnson researched and wrote the script with documents and actual photos from the archives of the La Porte County Historical Society Museum as well as other sources.
Judge Boklund will explore aspects of the trial of Ray Lamphere, the man charged with killing Belle Gunness. Judge Boklund will deal only with the evidence against Lamphere concerning cause of death of the headless woman and the three children found in the cellar. The prosecutor had to prove cause of death before Ray Lamphere could be convicted. Significant portions of Judge Boklund’s presentation will include verbatim testimony of the medical witnesses who were called to establish that Belle Gunness died as a result of the fire at her home. Those present can hear exactly what the jury heard and decide for themselves if the jury was right or wrong in its decision.
“The Gunness Mystery” DVDs and other Gunness merchandise will be available for purchase.
