The Hesston Steam Museum crews are gearing up for our 68th Annual Labor Day Steam & Power Show!
This Labor Day Weekend at the Hesston Steam Museum acquired the 1911 Avery Steam Tractor and brought this massive machine back to the museum for the first time in over 30 years! It can develop 120 horsepower, weighs twenty-five tons, and is simply massive in scale – it is a must-see big steam machine!
The new 1911 Avery Steam Tractor will be featured all weekend long, one of the largest operating steam-powered tractors in the United States will be demonstrating advances in agricultural steam technology. The Avery Steam Tractor was built by the Avery Power Machinery Company in Peoria, Illinois in 1911 for heavy haulage and plowing. The Avery was a staple at the Hesston Steam Museum until the 1990’s, when the engine was sold to an individual from another organization.
Also New this Year, the BRAND NEW Blacksmith Shop Exhibit Building! We’re excited to announce that we have built an all-new structure to demonstrate the art of blacksmithing. In this new, interactive exhibit, learn how steel is formed into different shapes and bonded together by extreme heat, anvil, and hammer! This exhibit will be unveiled and dedicated with a ribbon-cutting on Saturday, August 31st at Noon CT and open all weekend long!
D&RGW No. 361 is a 2.5″ scale model of a 3′ gauge C-21 class steam locomotive. This model replicates a full-scale locomotive built by Burnham, Williams & Co. in 1900. Only 2 of these steam locomotives were built, numbered 360 and 361. This beautifully detailed, steam-powered model was fully built by hand, using drawings from the original locomotive, scaled down to size! This fantastic piece will be operating Friday-Monday from 10a to 5pm CT pulling passenger trains.
No. 361 will be joined by other gas locomotives and passenger equipment on the 7.5″ craftsman railroad throughout the Labor Day weekend.
