Autumn Maintenance Tips for Diesel Engines

Staying on top of things with your vehicle is always a great idea. Catching problems early makes it easier and generally more affordable to fix them if you need to. You can remain vigilant with your vehicle by taking some necessary steps around the start of each season. Here are some helpful autumn maintenance tips for diesel engines you may want to consider.

Clean Your Engine

Your engine can always benefit from a good cleaning. If your engine doesn’t have any leaks or drips, you probably won’t have to worry about oil stains or greasy surfaces. A moist sponge can help wipe down most of the engine, and a small brush can help get into the tighter spots. If you do need to remove any liquids or grease, we recommend using a dedicated degreaser.

Inspect the Fuel Injectors

Fuel injectors are what help keep your engine running by releasing specified bursts of fuel to combine with air. If they’re not working properly, it can lead to a lot of problems with your engine, like reduced fuel efficiency and general loss of power. You should check for any of the common signs you need new fuel injectors and make an appointment to replace them if necessary. Cleaning and maintaining your fuel injectors can help lengthen your engine’s lifespan.

Check Your Air Filter

A helpful autumn maintenance tip for diesel engines is to inspect your air filter. Over the summer months, these filters often fill up with a lot of dirt, dust, and other grime that can choke your engine. Many experts recommend replacing your air filter every 12,000 miles or so, but it’s a good idea to check it and periodically clean it throughout the year.

Test Your Heat

You probably didn’t need to use your heat much during the summer. However, now that the days are getting shorter and colder, you should test it for a bit. On a cooler morning or evening, try running your heat to see if it’s working or if there are any unusual odors. If you feel like something is off with your vehicle’s heat, you may want to bring it to a mechanic before the weather gets too chilly!
