Join members of the Chicago Astronomical Society on the first Saturday night of each month to get a closer look at the evening sky over Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This month’s program meets on January 13th, at dusk at the national Lakeshore’s Kemil Beach parking area. In celebration of the National Park Service centennial birthday and the fiftieth birthday of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, every first Saturday of the month through November. During January, the Milky Way crosses the night sky overhead from northwest to southeast. The Quadrantids meteor shower will be starting up with its peak visible in the early morning of January. The Pleiades and Auriga star clusters will also be visible.
The society will bring their telescopes so visitors can get a closer look at the night sky, but feel free to bring a pair of binoculars from home, too. Please be sure to dress for the weather as there is no building or restrooms to warm up.
