For a smaller population than most places in Northwest, the City of Whiting has lots to do. Home of the infamous Pierogi Fest, Whiting Indiana has an enhanced the quality of life that should be envied by everyone. Whiting has an Easter parade, a July 4th parade, a Pierogi Fest parade and the Holiday Illuminated parade. Families from the East Side, South Chicago, and Hammond flock to Downtown Whiting on the weekends, cause there’s always something going on, not to mention the many downtown restaurants and shops.
Some of their additional amenities include the Whoa Zone Water Park, their own Symphony Summer Concerts, as well as Free Summer Concerts, an active downtown Art Studio, monthly Cruise Nights and their own Farmer’s Market. In addition, there’s the beautiful Lakefront Park on Lake Michigan, the Mascot Hall of Fame (with resident days), Oilmen Baseball, Ymca, an active and innovative Carnegie Hall Library and their own Hoosier Theatre downtown.
They even have their own monthly newspaper, which was started up by Baxter Design & Advertising in 1999 (for 21 years) in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce. The paper’s Calendar of Events usually has 25 – 30 events and activities.
In addition to monthly 2nd Saturday activities downtown, and several Festivals throughout the year, they are adding a brand new festival this September. The Empanada Festival will be held September 10th from 11am – 10-pm, at Whiting Lakefront Park with live music, entertainment, beer garden, food, crafts and family fun. The 2nd Saturday in September is the Lemonade Bingo on Saturday, September 17th from 11am – 2pm.
The rest of the year finished off with Wickedly Whiting in October, and their annual Home for the Holidays parade and holiday festivities. Check out Mayor Steve Spebar’s interview on the PanoramaNOW Facebook videos, where he mentions future developments planned. Visit www.whitingindiana.com or their Facebook Page for more information.
