Tornadoes, a Wicked Witch and four folks walking the yellow brick road…what could go wrong? Well, sometimes a lot can happen on a walk! “We Aren’t In Kansas Anymore” comes to downtown Whiting at Studio 659 this April, an art gallery opened to the public featuring local artists as well as from all over the United States.
Opening Night, Friday, April 15, Studio 659 will feature art inspired by the books and movie of the Wizard of Oz. Show curator, Kathleen Ulm, said, “I’ve always loved the movie and there’s so many talented artists making super cool art from the movie and books. So I thought, let’s bring the wonderful land of Oz to Whiting.”
Ulm is also the Vice President of Arts Alive the non profit organization that run the Studio. The mission of Arts Alive is to raise money through events they do and then use that money to fund art projects in Whiting-Robertsdale including school programs, concerts, art shows at Calumet College, Whiting’s Symphony at the Lake, etc.
Things are still in the works getting ready for the Oz show as you read this but artists joining the show will be from all over the United States and many pieces for sale will actually signed by the artist themselves. Ulm said, “These are very well known artists within the Oz community that I’m delighted to have accept an invitation to be in the show.”
There will be a great variety of paintings, sketches, jewelry, sculptures and graphic prints. Ulm says, “My hopes is that we feature not only traditional looking pieces but also modern takes on a 1939 classic. I don’t want to say too much because there will be many surprises to see.”
Also, included in the night will be an in person book signing by an author who has a new take on an old classic as well as her book cover art on display autographed by the artist.
