Miller Beach Creative Arts District is bustling with activities in the Month of May.

African Dance Workshop
Friday, May 3, 6 pm
$5 at the door

Join a fun high-energy workshop on traditional African dance! Dance instructor Kposivi Clark and drummer Baba Olabisi will lead participants through a warm-up and then share community dances Funga [Welcome dance] and Mandiani [Celebration dance] … so dress comfortably…Ase!

Glenda “Kposivi” Clark and Baba Olabisi are members of the African Descendants Society of Gary, Indiana, a group formed in the ’80s with a mission to provide insight into African and African American culture through storytelling, rhythm, and dance. Members have provided workshops, presentations, and performances for civic/social organizations, educational institutions, and the public. Kposivi developed a dance curriculum to enhance the learning experience for Lighthouse Academy K-8 for 4 years and has performed in Guatemala and Benin, West Africa. Baba and Kposivi presented a show for local cable TV entitled “Spirit Moves” showing Afrocentric moves for exercise.

 

Artist Talk with Allison Svoboda

Join exhibiting artist Allison Svoboda as she discusses her intriguing techniques…using ink, water, salt, paper, and breath to create large-scale paintings and collages that reflect organic patterns found in nature. Svoboda has been the recipient of many residencies including a 2016  Hemera Fellowship to study shibori, orizomegami, and calligraphy in Japan. 

 

Seedbombs. Native plant nature walk and workshop

Join a nature walk with artist Allison Svoboda exploring our own Miller Woods and the beautiful native plants on display. Allison will teach participants how to make seed bombs that can be used to help spread native plants and support pollinators. Suitable for adults and families with kids ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and clothing you can get a bit messy in.

Allison Svoboda is an exhibiting artist with solo shows at Walker Fine Arts and the Milan Expo. Her installations have been commissioned internationally with sculptural public works exhibited in Chicago and as far away as Australia. Svoboda has been the recipient of many residencies including a Hemera Fellowship to study shibori, orizomegami, and calligraphy in Japan in 2016. For the past three years, she has also been involved in the Chicago Conservation Corps, a group that creates pollinator parkways.

Linocut Printmaking Workshop
with Catherine Sollman
Saturday, May 11, 10 am  – 1 pm
$20 class fee, register at millerbeacharts.org

Learn the fundamentals of relief printmaking with Catherine Sollman. In this class, you will plan an image, transfer it to the block, and end up with beautiful linocut prints. You will learn to carve safely and accurately, making a range of textures and marks. We will teach hand-printing, so you’ll be able to keep on making prints any time you get the urge! Please bring an apron or wear clothing that can get messy.

Catherine Sollman is a printmaker with over 20 years of experience who has taught privately as well as in the high school setting. She is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Having continued her studies at Anchor Graphics, Spudnik Press, and Frogman’s Print Workshop among others, she works out of her home studio, focusing on monotype and relief.

Open Studio Life Drawing – Last Session of the season

$10 class fee, no preregistration required

Hone your artistic skills in a series of open studio life drawing sessions. The MBACD provides a facilitated two-hour session with a professional artist’s model. Artists from all mediums and levels are encouraged to join. Bring your drawing supplies – pencil, charcoal, watercolors (no oils).

Open auditions for the Miller Community Theaters’ summer musical Reefer Madness! A young man faces the evils and allure of the “Devil’s Lettuce” in this hilarious musical comedy about smoking the “Wacky Tobacky”. For auditions please prepare 16 bars of an upbeat song.  Performances are July 12,13,19,20 @ 7:30pm and July 21 @ 2pm.

 

Free Community Yoga – Every Sunday in May at 10am

Whether you are a long-time practitioner or a total newbie, this hour-long session will help you feel limber and refreshed. Mary has over 20 years of yoga experience and brings much knowledge to her practice and teaching. Dress in comfortable clothes. Props and mats are provided but you’re welcome to bring your own.
