Don’t let your kids stay cooped up inside all winter just because of the snow and cold temperatures. There are plenty of fun, family activities to try during the winter for kids of all ages. And if you feel like you’ve already tried everything to get your kids outside to play, here are some unique outdoor activities for your family this winter.
Build an Igloo
Every kid who grows up where it snows knows the fun of building a snowman. But how do you take building a snowman up a notch? Build a snow fort or igloo! Building an igloo can keep you surprisingly warm and insulated against the snow and wind, which expands outdoor playtime. Snow forts are also great for using as home base camps or as shields during snowball fights, adding to the fun.
Create an Ice-Skating Rink
If you have enough room in your yard, consider creating a small ice-skating rink for your kids. If your kids love ice hockey or figure skating, creating an at-home rink is an amazing source of fun. Start by shoveling and boarding off a small portion of your backyard. Then, lay a tarp over the boarded portion and fill it with water. In a few days, you’ll have a DIY ice-skating rink right in your backyard!
Rent a Snowmobile or Skis
Depending on your area, some local communities offer snowmobile and cross-country skiing trails during the winter once the snow has piled up. Check your area to see if snow mobile or ski rentals are available. These are both fun family activities, especially for keeping older children entertained during the winter months when we all feel cooped up indoors.
Have an Outdoor Fire
Finally, end your perfect snow day with a cozy outdoor fire. Just because there’s snow on the ground doesn’t mean you can’t have a roaring outdoor fire. You can still enjoy your fire pit during the winter months as well. And an outdoor fire makes it easy to warm up after playing in the cold all day. Just make sure your kids know the proper fire pit safety rules and maintain a safe distance, especially in bulky snow clothes.
Make dreary winter days into fun ones with these unique outdoor activities for your family this winter. Take advantage of snow days to try out some of these fun activities that your kids of all ages are sure to enjoy.
