Early in the new year, after a couple or three weeks without theater, I find myself getting antsy, so I look forward to the Towle Theater’s annual Season Preview, a lovely event. There is a small reception with light hors d’oevres and wine in the lobby, followed by a short sampler from the upcoming season.
For Jeff Casey, Managing Director of the Towle, the Season Preview makes all kind of sense. Over the years, the preview has been an extremely successful marketing tool with many of the people who have come to the preview becoming subscribers.
I’ve often wondered why other theaters don’t offer a preview. If you think about it, it makes sense. Ask yourself the question, how do people pick the place they’ll spend their entertainment dollars? More than likely they’ll pick plays/musicals they’re familiar with. Since the Towle specializes in new, quirky, sometimes edgy plays/musicals, the preview is the perfect time to introduce their audience to their selections.
The 2018 selections were presented by Guest Performers: Jerico Bleu, Aaron Davis, Colin Funk, Tess Galbiati, Paige Lichnerowicz, Jeannie Rega-Markioni and Jenn Roney with piano accompaniment by Towle Musical Director Elizabeth Tuazon.
The first production of the Towle’s 2018 season is the Chicagoland Premiere of “Pageant Play”, a comedy set in the hilarious, terrifying and surreal world of child beauty pageants. “Pageant Play” will run from February 23rd through March 11th.
The second production of the season is a Towle Encore (2004) Production of “Little by Little”, a charming musical about three friends who have known each other since childhood. “Little by Little” runs from May 4th through 20th.
Tony-Award winning musical, “Fun Home”, will have its Indiana Premiere at the Towle this summer. Three actresses play graphic novelist Alison Bechdel at different ages as she relives her unique childhood growing up in the funeral home owned by her father. “Fun Home” runs from July 13th through 29th.
The final production of the Towle season is another comedy, “Cockeyed”. Phil in Accounting is in love with Sophia, the boss’s secretary. His best friend Norman tells him he doesn’t have a chance and Sophia acts like she doesn’t know he even exists. What can Phil do? The Indiana Premier of “Cockeyed” runs from September 7th through 23rd.
Since the Towle is celebrating their 15th Anniversary Season, they’ve launched their 15/15 event series. The Towle will be “hosting” an event or announcement on the 15th of each and every month throughout 2018 to highlight and celebrate their Anniversary.
The Towle Theater is located at 5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond. Park for free in the lot accessed from Fayette Street, then enter the Towle from the alley door. FYI (219) 937-8780 or www.towletheater.org.
