Tips to Avoid Getting Sick at the Gym

As Indiana and Illinois begin to lift stay-at-home orders, the closer we get to gyms opening again. Phase 3 of the plan sees gyms allowing for personal training and other limited activities, with phase 4 opening gyms’ doors with a capacity limit. Even with gyms opening once the state reaches phase 5, cleanliness is going to be the key to keeping fitness centers open until there is a COVID-19 vaccine. Here are some tips to avoid getting sick at the gym.

Wash Your Hands Often

The best line of defense against the germs that might be lurking in a gym is to wash your hands often, especially before and after your workouts. If you are using a lot of equipment, then you should wash your hands even more often and be conscious not to touch your face and rely on a clean towel to wipe off sweat.

Wipe Down Equipment

Washing your hands is a great start, but you should also wipe down any equipment before and after you use it to avoid getting sick. Every gym should have disinfectant wipes easily accessible for you to use. As you wipe down your equipment, also think about wiping down your smartphone during your gym session as well.

Skip the Locker Room Showers

Locker room showers are incredibly convenient, but since we are in the middle of a pandemic, it’s probably best to skip them for now. At the very least, wear flip-flops if you do need to take a shower, but just know that you might be increasing your exposure.

Go When It’s Slow

The next tip to avoid getting sick at the gym, avoid peak times and go when there are fewer people in the gym. This may mean going either early in the morning or later at night. You can keep your distance from others much more easily when there are fewer people working out. If you search for your local gym on Google, you can get a good idea on when peak times may occur, so you can plan accordingly.

Work out at Home

The last suggestion is to consider building a home gym of your own by getting exercise equipment. Even getting a treadmill or a bench with dumbbells instead of getting every piece of equipment under the sun can be effective since you are reducing how often you interact with others each week. Just make sure you keep your gym clean at home as well.
