Tips for Photographing Wildlife in the Fall

Autumn brings an entirely new world for wildlife enthusiasts. As animals forage for food, fly to warmer climates, and otherwise prepare for the upcoming winter, photographers have plenty of unique and gorgeous opportunities to observe the natural world. Of course, capturing the perfect moment is easier said than done. Make each shot worthwhile with these tips for photographing wildlife in the fall.

Seek Out Colors

Fall is a vibrant season. The world is full of yellows, reds, and golds. All those warm hues make a beautiful backdrop for your photos. If you’re not sure where to find wildlife, start by looking for areas that are bursting with color. You can improve any shot with a well-framed and beautiful background. Plus, many of your subjects—especially squirrels and birds—are as attracted to the colorful trees as you are.

See Eye to Eye

Focusing on the eyes is a surefire way to get a close and intimate shot. For smaller subjects, do your best to drop closer to eye level. This will help you find fresh angles to explore. You’ll also be able to capture more of the autumnal scene, such as fallen leaves or twigs. These elements make for a unique and intriguing foreground for your photos.

Find the Perfect Spot at the Perfect Time

There are a few tips for photographing wildlife in the fall that will help you find a quiet, gorgeous landscape with an active animal population. Start by visiting beautiful natural areas. While local parks and other small areas are great, you can also make a trip of the experience by visiting iconic nature preserves or wildlife refuges across the country. This is also a great way to find wildlife you wouldn’t normally see at home. For example, you can capture fascinating mountain wildlife when you visit some of Colorado’s best scenic spots.

Once you have the perfect place to set up with your camera, make sure you plan your photo shoot for when animals are most active and other people aren’t around. Set out early in the morning or later in the evening to find fewer people, more peace and quiet, and the perfect lighting for a gorgeous shot.
