Tips for Making a Better Playroom for Your Kids

A playroom is a convenient, fun, and necessary thing when you have young children. Not only does it provide them with a space to play, pretend, experiment, create, and more, but it’s a space where you know they can do all that safely. When building a playroom, it’s always good to keep an eye toward the future, ensuring the room can change and adapt in conjunction with your children’s growth. If you aren’t sure where to start, here are several terrific tips for making a better playroom for your kids.

Leave Room for Displays

More than likely, your child’s playroom will serve as a library, dining station, nap area, science lab, art studio, and more. Leave room for all those activities, but add a wall and shelf to display their work and discoveries. Paintings belong on the walls, so spring for cheap frames you can easily update with new works of genius. Ongoing science experiments—pennies in vinegar, caterpillar cocoons, and so on—need an out-of-the-way space for observation. Have room for storing toys and the like, but leave space for a rotating gallery where anything goes.

Books and Nooks

No playroom should be without a comfortable corner or space with a place to sit and plenty of bookshelves. No one ever outgrows a book nook, though you will have to replace the seating eventually! Keep it simple at an early age, with cushions and a small modular shelf for a few picture books. Build onto it as the years pass, changing out their big kid chair for an activity desk and eventually a place to study. Let your child decorate the area as they grow older so that it’s always their special place. And stock it well with old favorites and new titles.

Keep It Comfy but Easy To Clean

An area rug that extends almost all the way to the walls protects the hardwood and gives the kids a soft and safe place to land when they trip or fall. Pick a low-pile shag carpet with a bright and engaging color scheme or design, and make sure it’s easy to clean with a basic vacuum and shampooing. The floors will see the brunt of the dirt and damage from busy little feet and fingers, but don’t forget the walls! Pick a VOC-free paint that’s wipeable in case a little someone decides to doodle there. Make clean-up easy at the end of the day by providing a wastebasket and plenty of storage containers.

Add a Fun and Unusual Element!

Here’s the last of our tips for making a better playroom for your kids. Add something a little out of the ordinary that breaks up the monotony. Cover a wall with a blackboard or wipe board that encourages easy-to-clean doodling with chalk or dry erase markers.
