Tips and Tricks for Preparing for Thanksgiving

Tips and Tricks for Preparing for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving can become a hectic day if you don’t plan and you allow yourself to get overwhelmed. The following are tips and tricks for preparing for Thanksgiving to avoid the meltdowns.

Check Your Utensils and Cookware

Planning the menu for Thanksgiving is a big deal, but cooking a great meal is tough when you don’t have the proper cookware and utensils. See whether you need to purchase a roasting pan or a bigger pot for a larger quantity of mashed potatoes. Make sure that your meat thermometer is working correctly and that you have enough serving utensils. Prepare yourself to avoid meltdowns on this busy day.

Know Which Items To Make Ahead

You can make several food items ahead of time and freeze them. Then, you only have to worry about thawing them out the night before or the morning of Thanksgiving. These items include:

  • Gravy: This is a great item to make ahead of time. You don’t even need to worry about defrosting it. Toss it into a saucepan to warm it up, and then ladle it into a gravy boat for the perfect presentation.
  • Cranberry sauce: This is another great make-ahead option if you’re not the canned cranberry sauce type.
  • Mashed potatoes: There are unconventional freezing options for Thanksgiving. Be sure to add lots of butter and cream, and voilà! One less thing to make on the big day.
  • Pie crust: Crust—or better yet, the whole pie—is an excellent choice for getting a jump start on dessert.

Prepare Your Dining Room

Clean up your dining room, make sure you have enough seats for the table, and have the linens washed and ready to go. You can even set up the table a few days in advance. Then, on Thanksgiving morning, you only have to worry about setting putting out glasses, plates, and silverware.

You can also add a buffet to your dining room for easy access to food on Thanksgiving. It’s also excellent for storing dishes during the rest of the year. Now your dining room will have more than one purpose: eating and storage.

Plan Out the Day

Grab your planner or print out a calendar and jot down a to-do list, notating which tasks you’d like to accomplish on which days. This will help you stay focused and on track to a successful Thanksgiving.

I hope these tips and tricks for preparing for Thanksgiving guide you to a beautiful, family-filled day. Don’t forget to make that leftover sandwich the next day!
