Northwest Indiana Community Foundations support Meals on Wheels

Three Local Agencies Come Together to Help Seniors During Covid-19

Legacy Foundation (with the support of the Knight Foundation Fund), Foundations of East Chicago, and Crown Point Community Foundation have collectively pledged $15,000 to Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana to provide delivery of nutritious meals for area seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We recognize that area seniors continue to need wholesome food and community support to stay healthy,” said Carolyn Saxton, President and CEO of the Legacy Foundation. “Supporting Meals on Wheels improves the health and well-being of Lake County.”

Meals on Wheels is continuing to serve new clients as the pandemic creates more homebound seniors and increases the need for meal delivery service.

“Meals on Wheels has served East Chicago well for decades and we want to make sure they have the tools to keep helping our seniors through this challenging time,” said Rosa Peña, Executive Director of Foundations of East Chicago.

Mary Nielsen, President of Crown Point Community Foundation, added, “Many of our residents in south Lake County count on Meals on Wheels as their main source of healthy nutrition.  We’re proud to partner with Meals on Wheels to ensure those needs keep getting met.”

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude that these foundations have come together and chosen to support our mission. This support will help us prepare and deliver critical nutrition, social support, and emergency meals, to support people in need.”

Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana delivers freshly prepared hot meals Monday-Friday and weekend frozen meals to people in Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Starke counties; serving 1,200 meals each day.  To support Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana or register for meals, visit
