The Negative Effects of Hard Water

The Negative Effects of Hard Water

Hard water can be found in almost every home, especially in specific areas like Texas. Luckily, we’re in Illinois so we’re not quite as bad, but we still have relatively hard water. You’re probably asking yourself, “what’s the big deal with hard water anyway?” Well, there are actually several negative effects of hard water. If you’d like to learn what the effects are, keep reading.

Hard Water Dries Out Your Skin and Hair

One of the earliest signs of hard water is dry skin and hair. Now granted, if you don’t routinely use moisturizer and conditioner—that may be your actual problem. That said, if your self-care routine is impeccable, you probably have hard water. A lot of people are surprised to learn that hard water can dry them out, but it makes sense. Hard water consists of calcium and magnesium which strips away the natural oils in your skin.

It Can Cause Serious Health Complications

There have been several studies that compiled evidence regarding health problems linked to consuming hard water. Some of the evidence found that drinking hard water can improve your risk of heart disease, reproductive failure, and cancer. Suddenly, the cost of a water softener doesn’t seem so bad.

Your Clothes Will Fade and Deteriorate Faster

If you consider yourself a fashionista, we have some difficult news to share. Hard water can fade the color of your clothes. The excess minerals strip away the dyes used to make your trendy clothes, well, trendy. Additionally, all those minerals virtually devour the fabric and reduce the longevity your clothes would otherwise have with soft water.

It Can Damage Your Plumbing and Appliances

As if all these effects aren’t bad enough, there’s more. The minerals found in hard water will accumulate over time and make your showerheads, faucets, and pipes look brutal. That accumulation can also be found in your appliances like the dishwasher, washer, and refrigerator. On top of it all, hard water wreaks havoc on your plumbing and costs you money in repairs.

As you can tell, the negative effects of hard water can be serious to say the least. Not only can hard water seriously affect your health and skin, but it can also practically ruin your home. If you don’t want to deal with all these issues, treat yourself to a water softener.
