Swimming in Lake Michigan At Indiana Dunes Safety Tips

Safety first! Lake Michigan’s waters pose serious dangers to visitors at Indiana Dunes National Park. Never underestimate the power of Lake Michigan. Stay informed and protect yourself and your loved ones with these important reminders:
1️⃣ Know before you go. Is it safe to swim today? Check current weather and beach conditions.
2️⃣ Beware of rip currents. A rip current is a water current that can occur near beaches with breaking waves. This strong, localized, and narrow current of water moves away from the shore, cutting through the lines of breaking waves like a river running out to deeper waters. Caught in a rip current? Flip, Float, and Follow. Flip onto your back. Float and Follow along with the water (even if it takes you a bit further into the lake,) then swim to the side out of the rip current and back to the shore on waves coming back towards the beach.
3️⃣ Beware of other currents. Longshore currents can carry swimmers far down the beach. Structural currents near objects like piers or jetties create dangerous conditions known as the “washing machine effect,” where chaotic currents make it difficult to remain above the water.
4️⃣ Be a water watcher – always watch your children when they are on the beach or in the water. Keep young children within arm’s reach.
5️⃣ Swim with a life jacket.
