Keenan Baxter performing Celtic Music at St. Patrick Parish in East Chicago.
Local Celtic composer and keyboardist gears up for several St. Patrick’s performances every year. At the Age of 10, Keenan Baxter from Valparaiso Indiana, saw the show “Spirit of the Dance” at Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. After the show, he was compelled to buy the cd and he listened to it over and over. Now, he’s a sensational Celtic composer and has created his own Celtic album ranging dynamically from the most sensitive and touching original Irish songs to hard-hitting reels and jigs. Although Keenan is not from the homeland of Ireland, nor is he Irish, he began composing his own Celtic songs 10 years ago.
Keenan brings festive and danceable reels and jigs to airs brimming with nostalgia and sentiment. Keenan artfully layers harp with bag pipes, accordion, strings, fiddles, atmospheric vocalese and an electronic undercurrent for an intriguing fusion of old and new on his Celtic album (titled “Reminant”)
Why the title “Reminant?” After all, it’s not even in the dictionary! Well according to Keenan, it came to him in a dream. The word actually comes from the 15th century and means, “remnant or remainder.” One can say that Keenan’s album celebrates the traditional Celtic music from the past and admires Celtic music as it is still an inspirational and stunning genre of music today!
