Signs Your Job Is Hurting Your Mental Health

Signs Your Job Is Hurting Your Mental Health

Work has always been a significant part of human life. We work not just to make a living but to be able to advance our careers and achieve our dreams. But what happens when our jobs negatively affect our mental health?

For many people, work can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems. Even a dream job can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being, especially if you ignore the issue and let it continue. Learn how and when to take action and find the help you deserve with these common signs your job is hurting your mental health.

Difficulty Sleeping

Your sleep routine is a good indicator of your mental health. If you’re dealing with stress or anxiety, your sleeping habits are often one of the first things to change as a result. Stress and anxiety can lead to insomnia and other sleep disorders that are detrimental to your health. Poor sleep leads to poor productivity at work, which in turn exacerbates work stress and other issues, creating an unhealthy cycle that’s hard to break. If you find yourself tossing and turning or unable to get restful sleep, pay attention to what’s happening at work to see if you can identify and fix the issue.

Chronic Stress

A certain amount of stress at work is normal; everyone goes through busy or tough periods that take their toll. However, these stressful times should come and go on their own. When that stress starts to seem never-ending, though, it’s a clear sign that your job is affecting your mental health.

Chronic stress can lead to physical symptoms like muscle aches or stomach issues and mental health disorders like anxiety or depression. Over time, stress can lead to burnout, which leaves you feeling exhausted, aimless, and apathetic toward your work. Pay attention to how job stress affects you at work and in other areas of your life. Don’t be afraid to look into how a licensed psychologist can help with workplace burnout, which can assist you in creating a more positive professional and personal life.

Poor Work-Life Balance

It’s common for work to spill over into personal time, but if you find that you’re always working and struggling to switch off, it’s time to address it. Setting boundaries at work is easier said than done, especially if you have a boss or colleagues who encourage poor work-life balance. Start with small habits like walking away from your desk during breaks and gradually work your way up until you have clearer boundaries between working hours and the rest of your life. Remember, you work so you can enjoy life—not the other way around.
