Public Discussion On Porter County Data Centers Has Been “Delayed”

See below a recent Press Release was just submitted regarding the Porter County Data Centers, that was supposed to have been on the agenda of the March 26th Planning Commission meeting, but has been “delayed.”

PUBLIC MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, MAY 13TH AT THE PORTER COUNTY EXPO CENTER.

The Porter County Planning Department (PCPD) had considered having a Data Center developer who has recently contacted the PCPD make a personal introduction of their company while also providing an overview of their intentions at the regularly schedule Plan Commission meeting on March 26, 2025 at 5:30 pm.  In consideration of other non-related cases being heard by the Plan Commission on this date, it has been decided to reschedule the data center introduction meeting to a later date so that the different agenda items can be given the full attention they deserve.

As we have observed during the recent data center discussions in other communities throughout our county, the commissioner’s office, in cooperation with the PCPD, believes that any public presentation related to any prospective data center merits its own public meeting rather than being combined with other non-related cases involving other county business.

As many residents know, data centers have recently taken center stage in the newspapers, social media, and various public meetings. This has not gone unnoticed by county officials. As such, Porter County government aims to provide the proper forum where everyone can appropriately discuss and consider presentations and public comments while representing all sides of this important subject.

The rescheduling of this meeting allows the County to engage in thoughtful planning, notify interested parties, and make proper meeting space accommodations so that all sides of the topic can be heard and meaningful discussion can be achieved. Furthermore, as elected and appointed officials, this additional time allows us to formulate meaningful questions and conduct necessary research on this topic.

More information about scheduling a public meeting on this subject will be forthcoming soon.

Respectfully,

Jim Biggs. President – Porter County Board of Commissioners

EDITORS NOTES:
      Porter County Council
has very little authority regarding the Data Centers, and will only get involved when there is a request for Tax abatement after it has been approved by the Commissioners. (The Find Porter County Council Meetings here.)

Since Monday’s City Council Meeting, PanoramaNOW has discovered an article online worth mentioning here. “US Admits Data Centers are Harmful to Your Health,”  This article quotes a recent report by Shaolei Ren, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Riverside and an expert on AI sustainability. According to the Ren Report from 2019 – 2023 there have been over 1,100 premature deaths, according to his calculations.

The company seeking to build Data Centers in Northwest Indiana is described as a “well-capitalized developer with developments in Northwest Indiana and the United States.”

“Agincourt Investments LLC is an experienced real estate developer that is well capitalized. Over 30+ years, Developer has acquired or developed over 50 million square feet in real estate,” the company said in a recent purchase agreement.

Karis Critical is seeking to develop a nine-building campus on a 180-acre site in Merrillville; Wylie Capital is looking to build a 1.2 million sq ft (111,480 sqm) data center site in the city; and Province Group is targeting a 1 million sq ft (92,900 sqm) campus there.

Provident Realty recently proposed a seven-building campus in nearby Burns Harbor. Provident also proposed an eight-building data center campus in Chesterton in May 2024, but saw the plans rejected.

Regarding the Wheeler / Union Township Data Center, you can find out more information on this Facebook Page.

According to Izaak Walkton of Porter County, it’s alarming for just one step to take place in the development process. “Once a developer – utility- town – or county gets a foothold and begins to build, they often cluster so they need to “build out” with more high transmission line corridors for more power which has led to Eminent Domain.” In fact, the RDC took a filed trip to St. Joe County, most likely at the active Amazon hyperscale data center construction site.

ABOUT QTS AND AXPK:

QTS had posted the Porter County Data Center on their Website, but it was soon taken down. QTS is based out of Atlanta Georgia, with their Headquarters in London England. QTS is the global digital infrastructure leader connecting the world’s economy.
QTS and AXPK, LLC are combining forces to build a data center in Porter County, next to the Union Township High school. However, their phone number is registered as 312-636-5401 which is associated with a company named CSC Corporation (now DXC Technology) operates out of Wilmington, DE.
According to AI: “DXC Technology has numerous data center locations, with some owned or leased and others managed in a colocation setting. Specifically, DXC Technology has 43 owned or leased sites globally, in addition to over 250 managed colocation locations.
