NIPSCO Customers Complaining About Orange Gas

Hundreds of Northwest Indiana NIPSCO customers have posted they have orange gas. Yet, a persistent orange or yellow flame from a gas appliance is a warning sign of danger. It indicates incomplete combustion, which can produce dangerous and odorless carbon monoxide (CO) gas.

Orange Gas Also Increases Usage, Which also Makes The NIPSCO Delivery Fees Go up!

“I just installed a NEW Furnace (Jan 24, 2026) in Valparaiso, set the Gas Pressure and all the good stuff. I’m not sure what’s going on with Nipsco’s Gas, but this is not right. Not a flicker of blue flame. Solid orange.: . . . “I am an HVAC Technician and have been for almost 12 yeas, Natural Gas is not supposed to burn orange,” states Harley Wise II.

Hundreds of People have Reported their GAS IS YELLOW OR ORANGE, when It’s supposed to be BLUE! Both on Stoves, Ovens, Furnaces, and Water Heaters.

Why an Orange Flame is Dangerous
A gas flame should ideally be steady and blue, which signifies safe and efficient combustion with an optimal mix of gas and oxygen. An orange flame, however, means the fuel-to-air ratio is off, leading to several potential hazards:
  • Carbon Monoxide Production: The primary danger is the potential release of high levels of carbon monoxide, known as the “silent killer” because it is a colorless and odorless gas. CO poisoning can cause headaches, dizziness, and fatigue and can be fatal in large amounts.
  • Other Pollutants: Incomplete combustion also releases other harmful pollutants into your home’s air, such as nitrogen dioxide and the carcinogen benzene, which are linked to respiratory issues like asthma and cancer, especially in children.
  • Reduced Efficiency: An orange flame indicates a lower flame temperature and wasted fuel. Soot Buildup: It can cause soot or blackening on your cookware and in ventilation systems, which can be a fire hazard over time.

    Why Orange Flames?
    • Impurities: Orange or yellow flames can mean particles (like dirt) in the gas supply, affecting combustion.
    • Pressure Issues: Incorrect gas pressure can also cause abnormal flames.

If You Have Orange Gas you should Call NIPSCO’s emergency line at 800-634-3524 or 911
