New Zoo Exhibit Planned for 2023 at Washington Park Zoo

The Washington Park Zoo began in 1925 when a retired animal trainer moved this pet brown bear named “Jake” to the Washington Park lakefront. In 1927 city manager Albert Coden , Wesley Kibby and Max Gloye with a special group created the Zoological Gardens. In 1928 the Zoo Board (Michigan City Zoological Society) was founded and the Zoo was moved off the lakefront to its present location in the sand dunes over looking the lake across from Washington Park.

Under President Roosevelt, The Federal Emergency Relief Administration and New Deal policies took place across the United States and at the Washington Park Zoo. It’s believed that the Washington Park Zoo is the only Zoo completely designed and landscaped by the WPA, FERA and CWA (Civil Work Administration).

The Washington Park Zoo sits on 15 acres with around 90 species totalling over 200 animals. We at the Michigan City Zoological Society are an independent volunteer non-profit 501c3 organization.

“Our board consists of around 15 members whose purpose is to lend financial support, acquisition of new animals, assets in veterinarian cost up to $25,000 a year, host fundraising events, write grants, capital improvements to exhibits and much more,” stated Johnny Stimley Zoological Society President.

This year the Zoological Society was excited to raise $185,296.21 towards the zoo’s expansion of “The Big Cat Exhibit” which will open in 2023. Follow the Michigan City Zoological Society Facebook page for our next event. Each year’s events are: Brew at the ZooRunning Wild 5k Run and Walk and Polar Plunge. Any questions or to donate to the Michigan City Zoological Society contact Johnny Stimley at Johnnystimley@mail.com.
