Most Valuable Tips for off-Roading in the Sand

In many cases, off-roading in the sand can be challenging. Not only does it slow you down, but sand can also drive your wheels deep into the ground, forcing you to call a tow truck. Many people don’t know a few techniques they can employ to make their time behind the wheel a bit better. Here are some of the most valuable tips for off-roading in the sand.

Reduce Tire Pressure

One of the preemptive measures you can take to decrease your chances of becoming stuck is decreasing your tire pressure. By making your tires softer, you enable the tread in the tires to sit with a wider surface area against the ground. While this does improve traction, you must be careful not to stress the tires’ walls too much while doing this. Otherwise, the tires can pop, as their walls can’t handle that much stress in a softer environment.

Avoid Rapid Acceleration

Sand has a nasty habit of displacing itself underneath your vehicle. This is the reason so many people end up becoming stuck in sand in the first place. When you accelerate rapidly, you don’t give your wheels a chance to force the sand to settle below it. Instead, you essentially use your tires as shovels and scoop out the sand beneath them by increasing the acceleration too quickly. It helps to have some recovery tools in these cases. But you can use your truck’s carpets to provide traction in a pinch. Place the rugs on the front bottom areas of the tires. The rubber should catch and provide a more stable surface for the tires to roll on.

Bring Recovery Equipment

The last—and arguably most important—tip is always to bring recovery equipment based on the terrain you drive on. This way, you can move your truck when it becomes stuck while off-roading. With sand, one of the more popular methods of recovery is using traction boards. You place these in front of the wheels, providing surfaces that displace weight on uneven or unsteady surfaces. These traction boards are usable in muddy and rainy environments as well.

No matter who you are, these tips for off-roading in the sand will undoubtedly prove to be valuable when you find yourself on this type of terrain. Remember that when your vehicle becomes stuck anywhere, it’s important to remain calm and rely on the knowledge you already have to get out of the situation. Happy riding!
