Miller Beach Has a Full Calendar in January

The Miller Beach Arts & Creative District, a cultural hub located in the Miller section of Gary, Indiana, says “January won’t be a bore.” Celebrate the arts with us on the Southern Most tip of Lake Michigan, surrounded by the Indiana Dunes National Park. Enjoy an eclectic mix of exhibits and events every weekend year-round plus different artisans each month, live music, our biennial public arts festival, seasonal markets, and much more.

DMCT (Digitally Correct Meta-Troubadours)

Joining us again after their resounding success in 2022, the DCMT guys are ready to rock your world with live improvisational music featuring flutes, hurdy gurdy, bagpipes, drums, various percussion, didjeribone and marimbula mixed with synthesizers, Arc-of-the-Oven, and digital sound processing.

Musicians Greg O’Drobinak, David Hunter and Mike Becker founded DCMT in 1994 as a vehicle for improvised music.  Listen for spontaneous acts of creativity …and whatever else your mind imagines. Presented as part of the 2023 community art exhibit Our Community Wonderland open through January 19.

Come hear the artists in this year’s exhibition discuss their work. Thirty community artists, seven community organizations, and numerous, generous neighbors have joined forces to create this eclectic and fanciful exhibit of paintings, drawings, sculpture, installations, jewelry, and folk art.

Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes

Responsible for some of the most celebrated gardens in the United States, Farrand helped create a distinctive American voice in landscape architecture. Award-winning public garden designer, Lynden B. Miller,  explores the remarkable life and career of America’s first female landscape architect. (60 min.)

Open Studio Life Drawing

starting Thursday, Jan. 18, 7 – 9pm
$10/session drop-in, no advanced registration needed

This winter, hone your artistic skills in a series of open studio life drawing sessions. The MBACD provides a facilitated two-hour session with a professional artist’s model every other week starting on January 18. Artists from all mediums and levels are encouraged to join. Bring your own drawing supplies – pencil, charcoal, watercolors (no oils). Easels available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thinking pasta is hard to make? Think again! Chef Rebecca leads students step-by-step through the hands-on process of creating two kinds of ravioli and sauces in a fun and engaging afternoon session. Recycled Printmaking

Make “etchings” using household items and ordinary packaging materials instead of chemicals and copper plates! In this class, students will learn traditional printing techniques while exploring various methods of creating line, tone, and texture using recycled Tetrapak cartons. 

Free Community Yoga

Take your new year’s resolution to a new level in this relaxing and invigorating yoga class. Whether you’re a long-time practitioner or a total newbie, this hour-long session will help you feel limber and refreshed. Mary has over 20 years of yoga experience and brings a great deal of knowledge to her practice and teaching. Dress in comfortable clothes. Props and mats provided but you’re welcome to bring your own.
