Michigan City To Expand Singing Sands Trail

The city of Michigan City is pleased to announce the construction of a nearly 2.2 mile multi-use trail at the eastern end of the Calumet Trail.

The trail project offers connectivity for both pedestrians and bicyclists at the north end of Michigan City. This area features Lake Michigan, Washington Park & Zoo and restaurants. Also nearby are Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets,  Friendship Botanic Gardens, Blue Chip Casino, and many other tourist areas of local interest.

The trail head, located just west of the Porter/LaPorte County line on US 12, will mark the western start of the project. The path will cross US 12 at the trail head. Then, the trail heads east towards Michigan City on the south side of US 12.
Continuing on the trail will re-cross US 12 approximately 300’ west of the South Shore railroad tracks. From there, the trail will follow US 12 into Michigan City. Finally, this phase of the Singing Sands Trail stops at City Hall on Highway 12. The bid construction cost came in under budget at less than $2.5 Million.

When is this all taking place?

The project was bid through an INDOT letting in May 2019. Construction is anticipated to begin the week of July 8, 2019 with substantial completion of the project anticipated in the Fall of 2020. Note that construction will likely shut down for the winter months of December 2019 through March 2020. Construction will resume in early April 2020.
