Michigan City, IN – Officials in Michigan City are calling for the rollback of recent utility rate hikes imposed by NIPSCO.
On Tuesday night, February 17th, 2026, the city council approved a resolution urging the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to rescind increases in gas and electric rates implemented over the past two years. Councilman Don Przybylinski said the rising costs are placing a significant financial strain on many local residents.
“Our residents are hurting badly. They shouldn’t have to decide between heating or cooling their home, buying groceries, or paying for medication. It’s middle income individuals and families who are having to make these hard choices, not only those living at or near the poverty level. So far, I have heard from three people who have utility bills at $1,000 when they usually pay between $300 and $600 monthly, so something has to come in the form of rate and delivery fee relief from NIPSCO,” stated Nancy Moldenhauer, Councilperson, Michigan City Council, Ward 6.
TWO STRONG POINTS IN RESOLUTION:
- That the City of Michigan City, Indiana STRONGLY OPPOSES the currently- effective and ongoing increases to NIPSCO gas and electric rates, due to the aforementioned adverse impacts that said rate increases are having, and will continue to have, on families struggling to pay existing utility bills in the absence of intervention by the IURC and/or the State administration.
- That the City of Michigan City, Indiana, further joins with several of its neighboring communities in calling for the IURC to initiate an investigation, which would ultimately require itemization and substantiation of the monthly “delivery charges” imposed by NIPSCO, and further demands that NIPSCO cease its practice of assessing said “delivery charges” until such time as it can provide the requested itemization and substantiation of the validity of the same.
Nancy Moldenhauer continued to comment, ” the Amendment to prevent consumers from paying for Utility lobbying, marketing, association dues, etc., was rejected. The Amendment to remove sales tax from utility charges–like for groceries and medications–refused. And all Amendments on transparency and accountability turned down. ”
Przybylinski explained that the formal request followed a conversation he had with State Senator Rodney Pol, who represents Michigan City and nearby communities. According to Przybylinski, Pol advised city leaders to stand with their residents and make sure state regulators understand the community’s concerns regarding what he described as unjust rate increases.
In addition, the council is requesting that NIPSCO’s natural gas delivery charge be suspended until the company can demonstrate that customers are not being overcharged.
