Maple Sugar Time at Indiana Dunes National Park

Enjoy a sweet taste of spring during Indiana Dunes National Park’s annual Maple Sugar Time festival. The historic Chellberg Farm will be bustling with self-guided tours and maple sugaring activities from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm CST on Saturday March 9 and Sunday March 10. Regular national park fees apply.

In addition to the tours, delicious maple-themed products will be available for sale. Stop by the front of the farmhouse where Indiana produced maple syrup and related products. You can even learn how to make maple syrup at home and how modern maple sugar farmers make syrup today.

During the weekend, rangers and volunteers will be stationed along the farm trail to explain how Native Americans first boiled maple sap into sugar and how early settlers used large iron kettles to make syrup. While walking along the maple trail you will pass by the sugar shack where sap is still boiled down the way the Chellberg family did it back in the 1930s. Kids can learn how to tap a tree at the Maple Fun Zone and can meet some of the farm animals while enjoying a maple syrup snow cone.

Education fee-free waivers are available. For more information, please visit https://www.nps.gov/…/maple-sugar-time-programs-offered…

School Programs at Indiana Dunes National Park

Bring your school class or education group out for a ranger-led tour of Indiana Dunes National Park’s Chellberg Farm at Maple Sugar Time in March.

Take a walk through time from indigenous methods to the 1930 Chellberg Sugar House ending with a taste of real maple syrup in the Chellberg Farmhouse. While on the trail, take a stab at tapping a Maple Tree post to get the experience of how the tapping process works.

Though the program is designed to be presented to all grade levels, program meets several state education standards for elementary-grade students.

An education guide will be sent to scheduled groups. These 90-minute education programs are free to schools through the education fee waiver program. Programs are offered on March 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15.

Maple Sugar Time at Indiana Dunes!
