The Laporte Municipal Airport will be presenting their first Annual Air Fair from August 9th through August 15th, 2021 featuring the The B-25 “Maid in the Shade.”
Air Fair hours are 9am – 6pm Tuesday thru Sunday. Tours of the B-25 are Tuesday thru Thursday NS and Fri-Sun from 2-6pm, Rides are Friday thru Sunday from 9am to 1pm.
The Arizona Commemorative Air Force is bringing their B-25J Mitchell “Maid in the Shade.” They will arrive Monday, August 9th. Please note the B-25J arrival time is some time on Monday, August 9th, 2021. Exact time will be posted on their Facebook page.
Tours of the B-25 will take place Tuesday-Thursday from 9am-5pm and also Friday Thru Sunday from 2pm – 6pm.. Tours are $10/person or $20/family of four. B-25 rides will take place on Friday-Sunday 9am-1pm. Rides are $325 for Waist Compartment or $590 for a Jump Seat. Please note the Air Fair is open 9am to 5pm.
On Saturday, there will be aviation booths, the La Porte County Library Mobile Classroom, LIFT Academy, Rock 106.5, and Food Trucks. Bring a classic car and get special parking in the Antique Car Show area!
Sunday will be the Annual Pancake Breakfast, Aviation booths, LIFT Academy, 96.7 the Eagle, Food Trucks, and Craft Vendors.
The LaPorte Municipal Airport (KPPO) is a general aviation airport, home to 75 private and corporate aircraft. The airport’s location is convention short drive to Lake Michigan beaches, Notre Dame, local Casinos, and more. The airport features 24/7 self-serve mogas and 100LL, and fuel trucks for 100LL and Jet A.
The airport has a long history in LaPorte County. In 1920 local resident, Elmer Bulingame designed a monoplane (just 10 years after the infamous Wilbur-Wright flight.) In 1920 the first plane owner was a JN-4D Curtis by-plane, owned by Frank Kemp in LaPorte. In 1930 the airfield was located on the Ridgeway Farm just south of Laporte. In 1945 the city of LaPorte took ownership and increased land development and built the first two hangars. In 1958, the first paved runway was installed which comprised of 2,500 feet by 60 feet to be later extended to 4,400 feet in 1985.
Over the years, many more improvements have taken place over the 478 acres to comprise today’s 5,000 foot runway, ramp expansions, a private hangar, lighting, taxiways, a certified Flight simulator, Aviation Camp and STEM events.
Each year the airport sponsors events to help connect with the community. Last year, they held Scairport for Halloween, they hold a summer camp for youths and a monthly “lunch on the fly” as well as other special events, speakers and warbirds.
