Lake County Election: Beck vs. Olthoff – War of the Roses

War of the Roses – The Red Blue Battle Royale
by VALENCIA “MOTHER DIVA” DANTZLER

It was a very close race between incumbent Indiana State Representative Lake County’s District 19 between Julie Olthoff  and challenger former District 19 State Representative, Lisa Beck. As votes are continuing to be counted according to Ballotpedia Ms. Olthoff won by over 1225 votes. It seems these two wonderful ladies have been battling for that seat for years. Let’s go dig up some history.

In 2014 Republican challenger Julia Olthoff beat out  Democrat incumbent Rochelle “Shelli” Van Den Burgh.  Van Den Burgh served as the Vice Chair of the Family, Children and Human Affairs Committee, and also served on the Small Business and Economic Development, Elections and Apportionment, and Education committees. Ms. Van Den Burgh was appointed to the seat in 2007 after Democrat  Bob Kuzman resigned to take his dream job as a lobbyist with Law firm Ice Miller in Indianapolis. I guess “Greed is Good.” “Shelli”, was re-elected 3 times winning all 3 elections with close races and beat out all  the “Boys.”

It has been a few good years for us ladies; way to go “Sheili.”  But in 2014 Ms. Sheili saw “Red” coming her way and her face turned completely blue. Oxygen was gone. Van Dem Burgh met her match when the blonde bombshell firecracker Ms. Red riding in the neighbor “hood,” Republican challenger Ms. Julie Olthoff, and trust me this lady ain’t nothing to play with. She gets out in the community and will show up at your “house” so she can represent your “house.”

Julie beat Shelli by 302 votes in 2014. Excuse me but where is the recount? That race was too close to call. Why would Ms. Van Den Burgh not demand a recount or a run off? Perhaps she was tired and wanted to leave and spend time with her family.  Well I guess family time was over because Sheili ran against Julie in 2016 and this time she lost by 341 votes. Again excuse me where is the recount or runoff?

In my experience I notice that a large number of Democrats have the tendency to concede and not fight for what they feel belongs to them.  However, I have found that most Republicans will fight you tooth and nail. Illinois Republican State Rep Darren Bailey sued Governor Chubby (a popular nickname for  Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker) in 2020 for extending an executive order when the Illinois Law prohibits that. Read that story on Reuters here.

Now some voters felt that because Sheili was on the Election and Apportionment committee, this can be deemed as a conflict of interest if a committee person is up for re-election. Perhaps outside 3rd parties should be on that committee to ensure fairness.

Julie got the seat and was running the district until Lisa girl blue came charging through in 2018 and won by 251 votes. Wait a minute this was less numbers than the race between Olthoff and Van Den Burgh.

Now the question is if Republicans are the big fighters, then tables have turned why didn’t Julie demand a recount or run off? Well the only answer to that question is STRATEGY!. Since Julie did not challenge the 2014 and 2016 election results SHE BOTH LOST. Julie  just wanted to play nice girl and accept the results in 2018 because she was planning her comeback for 2020.

Readers, you must understand these races are not personal; it was never about Shelli vs. Olthoff or Beck vs Olthoff. This was a battle between Republicans and Democrats. But what about the rest of the parties, Libertarians, Independents and Greens, that is another story, stay tuned for that one.

Olthoff defeated Beck in 2020 by 1361 votes and she is not backing down ever again. 2024 will be a very interesting election. I think I am going to move to Indiana and FYI I am a proud member of the Green Party.
