Kids Invited to Compete in Scarecrow Contest

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens invites children in kindergarten through fifth grade to participate in the nonprofit’s annual Trail of Scarecrows contest. Taltree was named Gabis Arboretum in 2018.

Participants between the ages of 6 and 12 create a scarecrow based on a storybook and write an essay detailing how their scarecrow represents the story or character. Registration is free.

“Trail of Scarecrows is a great way for young people to get involved in a hands-on project that brings books to life while supporting environmental stewardship in their community,” said Programs Manager Ellen Kapitan. “Many past participants brought their families to Taltree to view their finished scarecrows and spent the day exploring nature, some for the first time. Fostering a love of books and care for nature is what the project is all about.”

The entries will be displayed across from Taltree’s Railway Garden Depot throughout the month of October. Guests will vote on their favorite scarecrows with the top three being revealed at an awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at Taltree. All participants are invited to the ceremony free of charge.

The Trail of Scarecrows is open to school groups, community organizations, homeschool co-ops, churches and families. Groups must have a minimum of five children between the ages of 6 and 12 and be led by one adult. All registrations and essays are due by Sept. 26, with scarecrows due by Oct. 1.

For more information and registration forms, go to www.taltree.org or contact Programs Manager Ellen Kapitan at ekapitan@taltree.org or (219) 742-8147.
