It’s with great excitement that the 3rd BioBlitz will be held in Indiana Dunes Region, where Chicago scientists and the public come together for a 4 day BioBlitz. A Biodiversity Blitz, or BioBlitz, is a rapid assessment of what lives in a particular area at a given point in time. Biodiversity, the variety of living things, is often discussed in terms of the rain forest or the ocean, not somewhere familiar or local like the Indiana Dunes in Northwest Indiana. The 2022 Bioblitz Dates are: Fri April 29; Sat. April 30th; Sunday May 1st ; Monday May 2nd, 2022. Organized teams will converge on the Calumet Region, Indiana Dunes, and the Shirley Heinze Nature Preserves to conduct an extensive inventory of the surprising biodiversity living within the industrial landscape of landfills, refineries, and abandoned steel mills. Beyond those doing the field work there are many community organizations that ensure meaningful participation for the public.
