How To Properly Prep and Plan for Your Big Move

How To Properly Prep and Plan for Your Big Move

A move into a new home guarantees a couple of things. First, it brings a new adventure for you, and second, it ensures some hectic days. But what if there was a way to avoid the stressors and frustrations of the moving process?

Well, there is. If you learn how to properly prep and plan for your big move, you can smoothly go through the whole transition.

Create a Packing Schedule

Packing is part of why the moving process is such a long ordeal, especially if you start a day or two before the big move. Figuring out when you should start packing for a move eliminates all this frustration.

Create a packing schedule about a month in advance. If you do a little bit every weekend or have downtime, you’ll give yourself time to organize better. The sooner you start the process, the better.

Avoid packing away essential everyday things too early. Save those for last. But start placing items you know that you can put away in boxes and label the boxes to keep things organized.

Make a Checklist

Sometimes, things can slip our minds, especially when so much happens at once. Make a moving checklist to stay on top of everything. When you write something down, it helps you commit it to memory.

Focus on big tasks and little tasks on your checklist. Remember, no detail is too small. If it crosses your mind suddenly, then write it down. Keep the list on your phone instead of a piece of paper that can easily get lost.

Include things like who you need to contact, when to forward your mail, and what packing material you need to order.

Handle Your Electronics

Back up and save all pertinent information before you pack up your electronics. You want to avoid losing any vital information if an accident happens during the move. Use an extra hard drive to store all data correctly.

Take pictures of your devices before you dismantle them, especially those with complicated setups. The photos will help the reassembly process fly by in your new home. Keep wiring near the device it corresponds to when packing up your electronics to avoid entanglement and confusion.

Color Code Your Boxes

Sometimes, relating an object to color helps you identify its placement faster than words. You can use markers or colored tape to coordinate your boxes. Start by assigning each room a color.

Doing this will also help the movers know where to place everything. Tell them the system you have in place beforehand so that you won’t have to delegate so much when you all arrive at the new house.

The color-coded boxes will make the unpacking process more straightforward as well. You won’t have to transfer and move boxes around when you’re ready to unpack.

Save yourself from unnecessary frustration and properly prep and plan for your big move before the day arrives.
