High Hopes for Gary/Chicago International Airport

Drove 20 min from my home in Northwest Indiana to the airport — no traffic, easy access, familiar area last Wednesday, February 8th, 2023. However, I was going to the Gary Chicago International Airport Authority (GCIAA) MEETING! Wouldn’t an airport with passenger service be dreamy in Northwest Indiana?  And don’t we deserve that? Anything done the right way can be successful similar to Gary Mayor’s Jerome Prince’s mode of operandi.

The joint civil-military public airport was built in 1954 at the present site, three miles northwest of the city center of Gary, Indiana and just 25 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop.  It is operated by the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority, which was created by an interstate contract between Gary, Chicago, and Indiana near prominent highways 90, 80/94 and the Chicago Skyway.   At present the Gary/Chicago International Airport houses hangars for private Charter Services—business of leisure flights by B. Coleman, Sage-Popovich, and Gary Jet Center; it is a UPS hub for cargo; a Customs site; and allows planes access to the Chicago Air and Water Show, and hosted the Gary Air Show.

Reported in May of 2022, the Airport Authority purchased 5 acres of land that will be used for the planned extension of its crosswind runway at $42 million and reroute of Airport Rd  at $76 million, main goals of it Master Plan.  These Projects also allow for the environmental work necessary to get Federal Money and accommodate larger planes to take off and land.  Other initiatives in the plan include a new hangar campus, upgrades to infrastructure  for larger cargo flights; a new rescue facility for $199 million dollars with more mid-term goals of taxi ways and service roads at $25 million.  Long term goals over 11 years out include a new terminal, as well as admin offices, and further current site upgrades.

How do we make all this happen, especially large scale passenger service?  Great support, strong partners, and using the service to DC, Orlando and Vegas, obvious and popular destinations.  Not only do residents of the Region need flying services, but there’s excitement for in others to visit the Indiana Dunes National Park, Sporting Events, Gaming, and our Northwest Indiana  small to large business operations.

Just last year, in September, exploration was done again after nine years since Allegiant departed for Florida, Hooters to Vegas prior to that, and initially Pan Am with ATA the latest to explore service there and a contact made to Virgin Airlines.  The Airport Authority Board approved a contract with the firm Mead & Hunt to perform a comprehensive study of feasibility for the over 10,000,000 people who surround the 30 mile metro area.  “This is one of the necessary steps to be able to attract passenger air service,” said Gary Chicago International Airport Executive Director Dan Vicari.

Plus, an application for a grant from the US Department of Transportation, our own Secretary Pete Buttigieg, would be sought, which funds marketing efforts and makes revenue guarantees for airports that identify gaps in their passenger services.  Well, NWI has had NO unchartered passenger service so it’s a great opportunity.

In 1995, Mayor Daley negotiated a pact that gave millions to Gary Airport to stave off a Republican proposal to form a state or regional authority that would’ve included a new Peotone airport.

Some have said, well we have tried before, or the climate isn’t right, or what about competition with Chicago.  However, new Chairman of the GCIAA, former Congressman Peter J. Visclosky who was appointed by Governor Holcomb, said that the airport has incredible potential and we are betting on him along with Board Members including the latest Tom Collins, Porter Co, Luke Brands and that vision, to “FLY GYY.”

If you’d like to have more convenient, safe, and valuable passenger flights in an out of Gary, Indiana come to the meetings the second Wednesday each month at 11 am at the Administration Building, 6001 Airport Road, Gary, Indiana, 219-949-4925.
